Dual NIC setup

I've got an XP Pro machine that is connected to the home network using a NIC
card that is connected to my router. Although the pc has an internal IP
(192.168.1.5), it has full internet access through the router.

I am thinking of adding another NIC card to this machine and connecting that
directly to the internet by way of the cable modem. This NIC card would get
an IP directly from the ISP eg 85.xx.xx.xx

How can I have it so that all internet traffic on this machine no longer
goes through the router, but rather goes through the second NIC card that is
connected directly to the net.

I would still need intranet access on this workstation.

Thank you

What would be the purpose for doing that??? If you have a good router on
your home network, it would supply a good hardware firewall, whereas running
straight to your Cable mode, all you have is the software firewall in WinXP
SP2.

You're trying to bypass the lock-outs built into the router, yes? So you can
get to the porn sites, no?

If you connect your PC directly to the internet - without a hardware
firewall - you are just begging, BEGGING, to have your whole installation
compromised by malware.

Your co-workers or family will kill you. You might die with an erection (not
a bad way to go, I might add), but die you will.

Actually thanks for all the suspicious minds, but if you don't know, there
really is no point responding.

I like to download 'recipes' from the net.....the problem is that when I try
using the pc while it is connected to the router, download rates are very
low. I have already looked into opening ports, using dmz, encrypting header
packets, etc, but all suggestions have failed to improve speed.

As a result, the best option I have found is to add a second NIC and have
all internet traffic through the second nic directly connected to the cable
modem, while intranet traffic goes through the router. In terms of virus,
hackers, etc, I'm not overly concerned. I've got the mother of firewalls,
which is used by my company and there are never issues. I've connected many
times to the net like this and never received anything bad.

So the question again, how do I have it so that all internet traffic goes
through the NIC card connected directly to the cable modem, but intranet
traffic is directed through the router.

Thank you

When I had both cable and DSL ISP accounts, I wanted to have
2 NICs - one for each broadband access method. My personal
contact at Microsoft checked around for me, and the response
was that while it *could* be done by hacking the OS, it "would
be very messy".

Who manages the intranet. And do you have everything in place to protect
it from your second doorway to the wild wooly web?
