drives not recognized

I am running XP Pro. Recently, my computer stopped
recognizing my DVD rom and DVD burner (internal). They
did not show up in "My Computer".

I rebooted from the XP Pro disk. It seemed to load the
drivers for the drives, but the computer still takes a
long time to see them. If I click on "My Computer", the
flashlight searching icon stays on for at least a minute
before anything appraers on the screen.

This problem seemed to occur after I updated the XP Pro
for the first time. I tried a "system restore" to take
it back to before I did the update, but the problem still
exists.

Any thoughts? Thank you!!!!!
 
Do you have FIREWALL software installed? Could it be blocking you from
seeing the network?
