to give you all a clearer idea of how this problem occured i will take you
back to the beginning.
Switched on my computer and it wouldnt boot up, the more i tried the worse
it became. I tried using the win xp disk to run chkdsk etc but still nothing.
Anyway in the end after trying everything including what it said in my
motherboard manual, i gave up ( several days later!)
Before doing this i took the opertunity to open the case and add a extra
cooling fan as it gets quite warm where it is. Despite turning the computer
off at the back i somehow managed to accidently switch it back on and as i
was working in a tight space i accidently shorted the power! Bang went my
power pack.... I used a spare one and connected it up and tried it.
The computer turned on normally (phew!) and started to boot, but as before
stopped. Again i ran the diag programmes etc and still nothing so I decided
to do a clean install of xp.
After doing the new install of xp i tried to start her up.... again
nothing!!! Getting desperate at this stage i borrowed my parents compuer and
tried my hardrive in there and it worked fine! so i tried thier hardrive in
my computer and it failed to boot as did mine. It gets to past the bios
screen and a few seconds later just stops and hangs. So i now have two
hardrives that work in my parents computer but not in mine! I have managed to
see what has loaded before it hangs and the last file it loads is
MULTI(0)DISK(0)RDISK(0)PARTITION(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\MUP.SYS.

Any idea anyone>? Is this a BIOS problem or is it a new motherboard (baring
in mind the unexpected power shorting!

so for so much info but thought it may be relevent.
p.s i have cleared the cmos as well.

How many HDs are connected at one time?

How many partitions are there on each HD?

Which partitions are Primary and which are Extended?

Which Primary partitions are marked "active"?

What is the HD boot order in the BIOS? (This is NOT the device
boot order, but the boot order for just the HDs that the BIOS sees.)

What are the contents of the boot.ini file in the "active" Primary
partition on the HD which is at the head of the HD boot order?

Is your PC identical with your parents' PC?

*How many HDs are connected at one time?
Have tried it with both the main drive and a slave ( storage only drive)
connected and again on thier own. Set to both master and slave and then tried
again as cable select.
*How many partitions are there on each HD?
Just the one with the operating system on it.

*Which partitions are Primary and which are Extended? Which Primary
partitions are marked "active"?
How do i find this out?

*What is the HD boot order in the BIOS? (This is NOT the device boot order,
but the boot order for just the HDs that the BIOS sees.) the main HD ( one
with operating system) boots first if i have two connected ( see above) and
when only one connected it is the first ( master ) one.

partition on the HD which is at the head of the HD boot order?

No, but both are pentium 4 and have used both hardrives in both computers
before with no problems,

With Disk Management. But since each HD has only 1 partition
and each HD boots successfully on your parents' PC, that single
partition must be a Primary partition and it's marked "active".

I meant the HD boot order in *your* PC. This can only be determined
by looking at the settings in the HD section of your BIOS. Also, check
the device boot order (i.e. what are the priorities of the devices types
in selecting the type of device to do the booting).

The boot.ini file is a hidden system file just below the C: root,
i.e. at C:\boot.ini . You may have to unhide the file by
going to the Contol Panel, open Folder Options, click View tab,
under Advanced settings, select Show Hidden Files & Folders.
