Drag and drop problems!

After reinstalling Windows XP-Pro ('repair,' not complete), I am unable to
drag files from on location to another within Windows Explorer. When I try,
Windows Installer comes on and wants to install Roxio Easy Media Creator.
Installation hangs when Installer can't find a source at: J:\R\ROXIO 7\ to
install from. Where is this? I don't have a 'J' drive. It's impossible to
clear this Windows Installer utility without a power-off shutdown. What now?
Many thanks in advance.

This may not help because of the failed repair, but there is a registry
fix for the drag/drop problem:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 233. (r-h column) Enable Drag and Drop

Well, that did help, but... Now I can drag and drop, but the Windows
Installer continues to try installing Roxio Easy Media Creator 7, but I just
keep hitting Cancel, and after two to four times, it give up and the file
transfers. Is there a source for the Roxio installation so I can let Windows
Installer go ahead and just complete? Many thanks for the tip.

Thanks, Joe,

I'd like to have Windows Installer complete the Roxio installation, rather
than simply telling the utility to 'forget it.' The one fix on the page you
referred me to (Windows Installer cleanup) didn't click through. I'll try it
again another time.

Many thanks.

Joe:

If you are still monitoring this, thanks for the help. I saw another post
that mentioned Windows Installer Cleanup, so I downloaded it and ran it for
the Roxio installation. That fixed the installation box that kept popping
up, and I can drag files back and forth just fine, but now I can't drag to
disc. There is a second Roxio "classic (something or other)" utility in
Windows that allows me to burn discs, but it requires using that program.
I'll probably snag a copy of Roxio's latest version and just install it,
unless there's a simpler and cheaper way of re-enabling drag to disc.

Don't hold me to this, but I would think you would need a CD burner
software installed before the drag-to-disk option would work. Many of
these posts suggest that:

Right you are, Joe. The Easy Media Creator was such a CD-burning program,
and still functions if the program itslef is started and files-to-be-burned
are dragged into a window pane provided for this purpose. Then when "burn"
is clicked, the files do go onto the CD just fine. But it's the drag-to-disc
that wants an element of the Roxio program that is no longer there.

What I think I might do is pick up a cheap copy of Easy Media Creator 7, or
even 8, on eBay and just install it. As this program does not show up in the
Add/Delet Progrgams list, I would hope that the new installation would
overwrite the old one.

There is free CD and DVD burning software. Look at this list:

I too am having a problem with drag and drop files to CD. It used to work
just fine for me. After reading your posts, I realize I have a program on
the computer called Roxio for creating CD's. I did not install it there. I
have no idea where it came from. If I remove it, will that clear up the
problem?

That program was installed by the OEM, e.g., Compaq, or whatever brand
computer you purchased. It may have been damaged by a Windows Update,
or it might have had a trial time limit..

Drag and Drop to CD, as you would a giant floppy disk, is not supported by
XP's tools. 3rd party software that does packet writing is needed. That is
a component available with the Roxio program. It's currently called
Drag-to-Disk but in older versions was called something else which I don't
recollect at the moment.
