Can't "Drag and Drop" in Windows Explorer.

The "Drag and Drop" feature in Window's Explorer suddenly ceased to function.
I can't "Drag and Drop" any files between windows applications.

The "Drag and Drop" feature does work only within single nonMS apps (e.g.
dragging a file from one Roxio window to another part/window of the Roxio
app) but not between applications, whether or not they are MS apps.

I don't know where to look for a 'switch in the registry' or anything like
that. The MS knowledgebase had no relevant info.

Currently, I have to select, right click copy or cut, and then paste.
Unfortunately, there are MS apps like the media player which is designed to
use "Drag and Drop". If I select five music files and paste to the media
player, it will open 5 instances of Media player rather than a playlist of
five songs on one instance.

OS is XP Pro SP2. Dual Xeon, 1 GB Ram, plenty of HD space.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Right click the Start Button and select Properties from the drop down list.
On Taskbar and Start Menu Properties click on Start Menu Tab then Customize
opposite Start Menu Radio Button.
Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down to this check box and make sure is
checked:
[ ] Enable dragging and dropping
Click [OK] and Hit F5 to refresh and try to drag and drop, does it work?.

Thanks but...

It was already checked. I did try to turn it off, apply, close it
[properties] and then go back and turn it on again, apply and close it,
refresh Windows Explorer F5. All to no avail.

Hi Bob,

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Click on Security Tab then on Custom level and there scroll to the option
and check the Enable radio button:
[&] Drag and Drop
(*) Enable
( ) Disable

Another you may have Policy settings that set up to block/prevent drag and
drop so you can verify this through the command:
gpedit.msc
Another through this reg file:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;309662
http://aumha.org/downloads/dragndropx.zip

Or you can copy and paste this Key to an Notepad and save as drop.reg on
you Desktop and you can Import it to the same Key in your registry.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
NoChangeStartMenu DWORD 00000000

HTH.
Let us know.

I was the dragndropx.zip that worked. The other directions lead to
directories and registry areas that didn't exist.

Now it works. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
