What has happened to drag and drop on XP and W2K?

Hi,

I'm no longer able to drag and drop from windows explorer on my XP machine.
I've had the machine for over 4 years. I noticed the problem a week ago but
I'm not sure when this stuff stopped working.
I've been reading a lot of posts about problems with drag and drop on XP.
Neither of the solutions that worked for some who reported similar problems
worked for me.

I suspect that applying SP3 is to blame. I did it about 2 weeks ago.
Unfortunately I don't think I used drag and drop on the machine just before
applying the pack and right after. So, I can't say for sure if SP3 caused
the problem. I did uninstall SP3 and the problem did not go away.

I do have an AV software installed and did a full scan - no problems
reported.

Here are the symptoms when I try to drag (i.e. move) a file from folder A to
folder B:
1) select the source file with a left click in A and start dragging towards
B
2) the cursor changes properly to a semi-transparent thumbnail of the file
3) the destination folder gets highlighted when the cursor is over it
4) release the left button
5) the destination folder is no longer highlighted and the source file is
still in folder A

The drag and drop functions properly within applications so it can't be a
problem with a mouse. For example, one of my apps allows me to drag and
drop elements within its tree control which works fine. But, if I try to
drag a file from explorer onto a tree control of the same app I get the same
results as described above. That used to work before.

So, this is definitely a problem with the explorer.

I'm now experiencing this problem with 3 machines: two of them are XP Pro
SP3 and one is W2K. These machines are in different locations. They have
different AV software installed and fully functional (AVG, NOD32, Norton).

I have no problems with machines running Vista.

This is so frustrating. Could someone please let me know what I should be
looking for in order to nail this thing down?

Thanks,
Bogdan
