DOOMED...!

NJC©\(TM\)

Hello Newsgroup,

I have (not too) recently rebuilt my PC. Specs;

Software:
- Windows XP Professional SP 3
- Internet Explorer 8
- Media Player 11
- DirectX 9.0c

Hardware:
- Gigabyte EP45-DS4P Main board, REV 1.0
- Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 @2.83
- 4 GB RAM (Displays as 3.33)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT (512 MB RAM) Graphics
- SB Live! 24-Bit Audigy (Sound Blaster) Sound.

All drivers are up to date and my PC works perfectly. Except I cannot install
DOOM Collector's Edition. That is the original Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II and Final
DOOM (with T.N.T and Plutonia wads contained in Final DOOM). The CD auto runs,
displays the screen with the Install and Quit buttons, but when I select to
install, the install screen disappears. Nothing happens, task manager does show
the process Setup.exe that will stay there until the next Blue Moon if I allow it
to.

I am not at all a gamer, the original DOOM (for the younger more skilled panel of
expert Newsgroup readers and responders) was first released in 1994, it is the
only game I play, and the only one I wish to play. It did work on Windows XP Pro
SP 2, SP 3 no such luck. My questions being;

1) Is this the end of the Original DOOM? (From WinXP SP3 onwards)

2) Is there anything I can do to get it working on WinXP SP3?

and off topic

3) If I install Windows 7 64-Bit after it's released, will DOOM be archived on my
bookshelf of antiques? Or is there still hope of playing it then too?

Thanks and regards,

What are you running for a firewall? Being a lover of older games, I found
that some firewalls will interfere with and sometimes prevent the
installation of older games more so than newer ones, Zone Alarm being one of
them. Disconnect from the net, turn off your firewall, then try the
installation. If you can get Doom to install, then you'll probably have to
use compatibility mode to get it to run.
Can't tell you if it'll run on Win7 or not. I think that's going to be a
"wait and see" issue, although I imagine it would have a better chance of
running on 32-bit versus 64-bit.

Some older games just won't work with newer hardware. I have a lot of old
games that were great and simply won't run on any of our newer boxen. Oh
well. Look for a user forum specifically for these games to see if anyone
there has a suggestion.

I did a quick Google for "Doom user forums" and came up with a few likely
candidates. The first one:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=297

gives me the idea that Steam has the Doom games for purchase/download. Steam
is excellent and has been doing this recently - offering older games that
have been reworked to run on modern machines. So definitely look into Steam.

Here's another link I got from my Google search that looks interesting.
http://forums.newdoom.com/forumdisplay.php?f=56

The trick is to be creative with your Google searches. My next search term
would probably be "Doom video game user forum" to narrow down the results.
Now *you* try it.

Sounds like a fun rebuild.

I did a Google search for;

xp doom install

There are many people in your boat - they want to play Doom on XP, so
you are not alone. The problem of course is not XP.

There are lots of what appear to be good ideas and many with happy
endings, so I would learn from others that have successfully overcome
this obstacle (there is hope...).

Thank you so much Jose, it was a fun rebuild indeed, and your correct there are
tonnes of people in the same boat as me, I didn't go the Google path because I
thought, "...who plays the original DOOM these days...". Tonnes of people I have
discovered on your suggestion. Thanks again.

Great Links Malke, especially the SteamPowered forum, I didn't Google it as I
didn't think anyone really played the original DOOM. Ever heard young Kids
(anyone under about 32 these days) talk about Games...? I've never heard the word
DOOM spoken from them. Thanks again Malke.

There is a Windows wrapper for DOOM.

Google Doom 95, and get the free download.

You then add your WADs to the DOOM95 installation and play to your

All tanks to Malke and Jose. Google is a friend of DOOM, check out the additional
WADs made by the DOOM community I thought never existed anymore due to
technological advances in hardware, software and games. Check out all the people
still enjoying the original DOOMs, by that I mean prior to DOOM III, which is
good, but just doesn't quite cut it like the original ones.

Thanks again Newsgroup, may post this again in the age of Windows 7-64 bit, see
what happens.
