Doomed Laptop?

Hi,

I have a very strange fault with my HP Pavilion 4170us laptop; making it almost impossible to use - which kind of takes 3 possibly related parts..

1) Battery discharging itself by upto 50% overnight.
2) CPU usage hits 99% (and stays there) for the 'System' Process
(NOT System Idle!) Seems to be *possibly* triggered when I plug in or remove the USB mouse - which will also stop responding.
3) The laptop freezes (including system clock) until a part of the laptop above the touchpad is pressed, or sometimes lifting the front upwards! Then it continues fine! It has sat in this 'frozen' state for over an hour!
  • HP Diags on HP.com found NO faults.
  • Nothing logged in the Event logs at all.
  • Problem apparent with 2 different builds on one HDD.
  • Rebuilt OS with WinXP on a new partition on separate HDD - Same issues!
  • RAM removed and reseated - No change.
So - Do I take this to a dealer and say 'Fix it please, Mr'?
(Any experiences with such folk?)
OR - Get my screwdrivers out as it looks doomed anyway??

It's only 18 months old!

Any comments appreciated... Thanks in advance :thumb:

If you have a play with it & screw it up are you that bothered?
If you are then take it to be repaired by Mr Laptop-Fix-it.
By suddenly working if you touch it in a certain place could mean a loose connector or cable??

Suggest you may want to get a copy of Upgrading & Repairing Laptops by Scott Mueller if your un-sure.
It's a great book and taught me a few things not to do when trying to fix a laptop.

What ever you do good luck
