Domain List

Pat

I have a W2K network with AD. I have 100 users with W2K Pro. I am
adding XP Pro, the problem is when I finish setup and join my domain.
the first time I go to login and when I choose my domain to login to I
get a message saying to wait while domain list is created. this can go
for 15 20 minutes. what is it doing at this time and what could cause
this delay?

Hi Pat,

Thanks for posting here!

According to your description, I understand that after the Windows XP
joined the domain, it took long time to get the domain list at the first
time. If I have misunderstood your meaning, please do let me know.

Based on my experience, it is most likely that there's a delay when the
client tries to locate the DHCP server for the DNS value. This may be
caused by the hardware router or even the client NIC.

If you use a hardware router as a DNS server, the long time delay behavior
may occur because the Windows XP client first has to send a broadcast
request to locate the DHCP server first and then the DHCP server will
assign an IP address to it and provide the client with the DNS value. It
takes time to do the steps and will cause the delay.

If you use Windows server as you DNS server, the issue may result form the
client NIC drivers. If you are able to reproduce the issue, please get a
network monitor trace and analyze it to see whether the traffic is stuck.

For more information about the Network Monitor, please refer to the
following KB article: 148942 How to Capture Network Traffic with Network

We look forward to your reply. Have a nice day!

Pat, sometimes, this happens to me too. I have found that if I hit
CTL+ALT+DEL again, I am able to log in to the domain with no problems.
Try that and see if it helps.
