Domain Membership

I have an XP SP2 PC that I joined a NT 4 domain with. Before rebooting, I
went back into the domain membership window, and noticed that the name of the
domain I had just authenticated to had changed. After a reboot, I was still
able to login to the domain for the first time, although it took a number of
minutes for the desktop to appear. Does anyone know why the domain I joined
displays a different name on the client than what the actual name of the
domain is. Also, why is the computer taking so long to authenticate into the
domain and display the desktop. This is a fresh install of XP.

What is the name of the domain and what is XP showing? It's been a long time
since I used NT4 server but I believe it uses NETBIOS names whereas 2k and
2k3 use fully qualified names. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm
wrong.

Long authentication times are usually DNS settings on the client. For the
first DNS listed in ipconfig /all can you ping by name and ip? More
importantly is it a domain name server? Again with NT4 I could be off the
mark and its a NETBIOS/WINS problem.

It is normal that you wait a long time when you login in a domain. Cause your
computer would run some script and search the DHCP/DNS server and something
els. Depending on your network, it will take you 1 to 5 minutes to do it.
BTW If the change of the domain name is just add ".com" or something like
this, it is ok.
