Doesn't XP come with a phone program?

I have a phone line plugged into my modem, so how do I get the pc to answer
the phone or use the mic to talk? Doesn't XP come with a program to do
that?

No. The modem software may include something like the old Phone Tools but
only if the modem supports voice. To find out what kind of modem you have
and its capabilities, either refer to your computer purchase documents or
run a system inventory tool.

There is an application called 'Phone dailer' (click start>run then type
dialer then press enter) on XP and also Vista.

I've never actually used it and I know some people have had problems with
it, especially when dialling outside of their area code. I think this is why
so many people recommend third party phone tools.

John... First it is my personal opinion that top posting is wrong. But let's
ignore this, you are also adding two dashes after your post which many
newsgroup readers will strip right off and everything after it. It doesn't
happen with me since I have the option to leave it alone with OE-QuoteFix. I
just thought you wanted to know.

Caveat: I guess I'm sticking with the majority of top posters.

Anyway, Bill, your comment is enlightening:
you are also adding two dashes after your post which many
newsgroup readers will strip right off and everything after it.<

Is that what happened in my case? As you see below, there is no text
recorded for me between the first and last set of dashes by John.

I will have to check my signature file regarding the dashes.

As to your top/bottom posting comment I'm afraid I disagree with bottom
posting as do many other MVPs. While I respect your opinion it will not
change my habit of top posting. The original posts are uploaded to a
Microsoft server what the USerNet does with them after they have 'hived' the
posts off is their concern. This is a Microsoft community, not a usernet
community.

The phone dialer, for some reason, has always been 'well hidden' by
Microsoft. Even in Vista you have to use the Run or command prompt to open
it, although the interface is far better in Vista than XP.

That tells me a lot Mad Mike. As top posters tend to be totally selfish
people. As they don't give a damn about anybody except themselves. And
thanks for sharing your opinion. It tells me a lot about people like you!

I actually have two ISPs. One is an Earthlink dial-up and the other is
Comcast. I mainly use my Earthlink email address, and use it over the
Comcast cable. The dial-up is a back up, which has become essentially
non-viable since switching to VOIP. So, the pc modem is plugged into the
VOIP line. I don't know if Windows Live Messenger is installed.

I tried Dialer, and it fails to see a connection. I reckon I'll see Start |
Help & Support | To configure a telephony service provider.

Bill,

It's dash dash space, not just dash dash.

MS mail clients are inherently broken. If a user wants to reply above
the quote and use a sig file in OE/WM, the mail clients insert the
delimiter ( "-- ") above the sig. You smartly use Quotefix, but most
don't and don't care whether everything below their comment is stripped
by a proper newsreader or not. Only their reply is important to them.

But the other part of the brokenness of MS mail clients is that they
*ignore* the delimiter altogether when replying. Go figure.

Hi Jack,

If you replied to Malke, only his sig info would be stripped using a
good newsreader, because the delimiter (dash dash space, NOT dash dash)
was designed for bottom posting, NOT top posting.

If you reply to me, everything below the "-- " will be removed if you
have a good newsreader, not MS mail clients.

MS clients add a delimiter even when top posting and then *ignore* the
delimiter altogether when replying.
