Do you have Hibernate link in the start menu?

I've installed Windows Vista Home Premium RTM because I bought a new NVidia
graphics card in order to have Aero enabled. But now in the start menu there
are only 2 links:
* Sleep
* Shut down
Hibernate link is vanished!

Is Hibernate link missing in Vista Home Premium? Or is an Nvidia driver bug?
Because with old graphics card and with Home Basic and Ultimate I had all 3
links in start menu like shown in this image:

Sleep
Hibernate
Shut down

I only have sleep and shut down in my menu, no hibernate.
I have it set up so that when I push the power button on my computer or my
media center remote power button my computer hibernates.
I can't use stand by / sleep on my computer because it will crash soon after
resuming (this is probably due to a glitch in the hardware of my particular
video card that would require a replacement to solve the problem and its 3
years old. It crashes in XP as well).

Hi,

From Help & Support:

"In earlier versions of Windows, standby saves your work to memory and puts
your mobile PC into a power-saving state. Hibernate also puts your mobile PC
into a power-saving state but saves your work to your hard disk so that you
can safely turn off your mobile PC. This version of Windows combines standby
and hibernate into a single power-saving state called sleep."

The Hibernate option can be put on the start menu, but it means disabling
hybrid sleep (which basically does the job of putting your pc to sleep while
also saving everything to hard drive (like hibernation). That is, of course,
assuming your pc supports hybrid sleep. For more details on putting the
hibernation option on the start up menu visit this link on my website.

http://vistasupport.mvps.org/add_hibernation_option_to_shutdown_menu.htm

I'm using Vista Ultimate and even that doesn't put the hibernation option on
the shutdown menu.

If your machine doesn't support hybrid sleep then the hybrid sleep option
will not be available in the power options.

I have Vista Business RTM on a Pentium 4 box that's only a few years
old. Whenever it goes into the hybrid sleep mode, it refuses to wake up
again, and always requires a restart, so I've had to tell it to never
sleep. Is it possible that something needs changing in the bios power
settings to allow waking up from sleep, or what?

have you tried running powercfg -a from the run or command prompt. You
may also be able to use one of the other functions listed by using the
command powercfg /?

D

Daze N. Knights

Hmm. Typing those commands into Run and hitting OK, I get a quick flash
of a window (looks like maybe a command prompt window?) and nothing
else. Does this need special permission, and if so, how do I get it?

J

John Barnes

use the cmd in the run box or Command Prompt from the start menu. I
haven't needed elevated permissions.

Ah, got it.
----------QUOTE--------
The following sleep states are available on this system: Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby
The system firmware does not support the standby state.
----------UNQUOTE--------

So the system in question should support Hybrid Sleep . . .

Daze, The details from my machine are as follows:

The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby (S3)
Hibernate Hybrid sleep

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

My machine is just over 2 years old.

And here are the details from a system I just built this month (all new
everything), on which I am running Vista Ultimate RTM without having any
sleep problems at all:

C:\Users\System User>powercfg -a
The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby < S3 >
Hibernate Hybrid Sleep
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby < S1 >
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Standby < S2 >
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Is it possible that, for some reason, Standby < S3 > is required to
allow a system to wake up from sleep, without requiring a reboot?

D

Daze N. Knights

Hmm, no, that can't be it. I see, in the thread "Vista won't wake
properly," Hiawatha Bray is reporting a similar problem and the only
Standby mode that he's lacking, in that case, is <S2>. He's got <S3>.

J

John Barnett MVP

I'm not sure. I think i answered a psot a few weeks ago where the guy had
similar problems but he did have S3 option. I'll have to see if i can locate
it and get back to you.
