do i need to get a new router? need expert help to decide

Greetings..

I have 2 computers networked for home use. They share a couple of
folders and just swap files back and forth.
Both computers run XP home. Both computers connected to an older
router. One of the computers also has ZoneAlarm Pro.
(the zone alarm computer does all my "work" email, websurfing etc with
the other computer strictly for games.)

I have decided on a Dlink router ( DI-604 ) and almost got it. Then i
did some more reading and found that a router with SPI is better than
just the 604 (NAT).. so i have been looking at the DI-804HV..

my question is. is the 804 overkill for my casual no business home
use? Does the 604 provide enuf protection for my network?
I just want to be as secure as possible and keep any hackers out. I am
very careful with emails, I use IncrediMail and that fillters out
spam messages.

Also..do i even need to update to a newer router? I have a TRENDnet
TW100-S4W1CA (internet station with 4port switch)
(i notice a Dlink chip inside the Trendnet) When i do the online
stealth tests i come up secure. Just being paranoid these days and
thinking that i may be missing something using the older router (3 or
4yrs old now)
All "seems" to be working fine now, not even sure if i shud just
update the firmware. That old saying "if it aint broke dont fix it"
comes to mind.

So i thot i would come to the great guru's and post a question here

If you aren't upgrading to a cisco you would be wasting your money.

Just make sure you apply the firmware updates as they come along, they
will keep your router as secure as NAT can be.

I've got a 1710 (maybe 1720 - not where I can check right now) that I'd like
to use (as well as a 2610 - but can't use than now)...

What do I need to do to make it work as a NAT Firewall? Any way to load
balance to two different broadband connections?

IOS in the 1710 is c1700-y-mz.121-8c.bin

If you HAVE two ciscos sitting around you don't need my advice on which
to use.

If you don't know what you are doing then you shouldn't have them and I
will give you my shipping address forthwith.

now kindly **** off.

If you're just transferring between two computers, there's no need for a
router at all - just use a crossover cable. If you need to connect to
internet through ethernet as well, you might just want to buy another
ethernet card for one computer and connect through the internet through
that - it's much cheaper than a router and does the same job.

WRONG

Anyone who connects to the internet using ethernet, even with a single PC,
is very wise to get some kind of hardware firewall and almost every router
out there falls into that category.

....and don't go on about software firewalls. Software breaks and can be
disabled. Also, for software to work, you have to let the attacks into the
computer so they can be detected and stopped.
