I have a simple network. 1 Win2000 server running AD, it
is the DNS/WINS server. 10 workstations running XP Pro. A
DSL router is the DHCP server. I want to test to see if
name resolution is working properly.

What tools can I use to verify the DNS funtionality?

nslookup or dig for DNS resolution,
Netdiag for DNS registration and connectivity.

Incedentally, since you have an Active Directory Network you need to disable
DHCP on the router and configure it on the Win2k with a min. of these
options:
003 Router
006 DNS (Make sure you only use the DC for DNS!)
015 DNS Domain name (Your AD domain name)
