DNS problems

Greetings:

I have a single WIN2000 server running DNS. All has been well but I noticed
on all of my clients errors in the event viewer. Userenv - (windows cannot
determine the user or computer name. The RPC server is unavailable) and
Autoenrollment (failed to contact active directory) errors are occuring. The
only complaint has been not able to print and occasional rights errors.

Through my research, I came to conclude it has to do with the DNS. There
were some problems last month where we could not access our public
www.domain.ca address. The DNS record was unfortunately deleted and I have
not been able to put it back so it works properly.

When I do a nslookup, I get "server unknown". and IP address which is correct.

All clinets are DHCP (which the router does and not the DC) and the DNS is
configured with the DNS server IP address and also had the ISP DNS address as
secondary. I have since removed that address off the DC and some test
clients but still getting the errors noted above.

It has been a long time since I worked on DNS and I simply have forgotten
more than I ever knew: O

Here is what I have set up:

DNS - fileserver.domain.ca
Forward looking - SOA
Name server - IP address of DNS server
Host 'A'- IP address of router

Reverse looking - SOA
pointer - IP address of DNS server.

I know I have messed up config - just not sure where. Any suggestions would
be appreciated. Thanks.

Your configuration description is a little confusing. If you can help us
better to assist you, please post an unedited ipconfig /all of your domain
controller and of a sample client machine to better assist. This will leave
no question of your infrastructure's configuration. Also a word to the wise,
do not use your router as your DHCP service. It does not support Dynamic DNS
Update that Windows DHCP supports and much much much more. A router's DHCP
service is good for a home system without an AD domain, but useless in an AD
infrastructure no matter how large or small.

Believe me, we'll help you clean it up.
