Hello Carmen,
Odd, someone else just asked the same question.
I'd like to find out more about your configuration if I could.

Is this on a Pro machine, or server? W2k or W2k3/XP?

If this is a pro machine, you could try uninstalling / reinstalling
adminpak.msi (from your server CD).

If this is a server, have you installed DNS?

If you are sure DNS or adminpak is installed try running:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\dnsmgr.dll

Do other MMC snapins work?

Can you launch MMC.exe, then add the DNS snapin manually?

If nothing else works, you might try re-extracting the dll from the install
cd:
find dnsmgr.dl_ and then run:
expand dnsmgr.dl_ %windir%\system32\dnsmgr.dll
then regsvr32 %windir%\system32\dnsmgr.dll

Thanks.

Actually the adminpak.msi should be installd from the service pack files not
from the CD. And if you are try to use the admin pak from Win2k on an XP Pro
machine or if you are try to manage a Win2k3 Domain you must download the
updated adminpak.msi for Win2k3 domains.

I used the SWAG method.
The DNS snapin probably got corrupted.

If someone has a copy of a dnsmgr.dll that has been corrupted after
installing SP4, please let me know. If we have a problem with the SP, I
would like to make sure that it is investigated and fixed.

Thanks

I would like to reinstall DNS on my 2000 server how would
i got about doin that without reinstalling AD or the whole
server itself.

In the control panel, under add/remove programs, under add/remove windows
components, you will find DNS.
Deselect it and apply the changes to uninstall.
Reverse the operation to re-install.

If the zones are AD backed, they should be picked up automatically.
If the zones are file backed, the files are in %windir%\system32\dns, and
you can add them back in using the new zone wizard, just select to use an
existing file.

Michael,

I think in this case he was using the older snapin (pre SP4). The updated
adminpak from the pack seemed to have taken care of it. I myself haven't
seen any issues with this as of yet, but will keep an eye open for this. :)
