Display in Control Panel will not open at all

Hi again....ok I have tried just about everything to get my Display to open
up. I am not a computer wiz and I need step by step instructions. When I
receive an answer to my problem, I try to follow the directions people send;
but there is more to it once I try to fix the problem. I have the original
Operating system CD for Windows XP home edition. Will that CD help fix the
Display problem? I cannot afford a technician to fix my computer. I just want
to be able to change my desktop pic and screensaver....help!!!!

Hi PAMMY,

The DESK.CPL file in the Windows/System32 folder might be missing or
corrupt. Try expanding the file on the install CD to the Windows/System32
folder and see if that corrects the problem. To expand the file from CD to
the Windows/System32 folder (and this is assuming you have an install CD from
MS and not a Restore or Recovery CD provided by a computer manufacturer):

Insert the install CD. Open a command prompt window (Start>Run key in
CMD.EXE and then click on OK or hit ENTER). In the command prompt window, key
in:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\DESK.CP_ C:\Windows\System32

then hit ENTER

(in the above command, replace the X with the actual drive letter for the
CD/DVD drive into which you inserted the install CD)

When finished copying the file, in the command prompt window, key in:

EXIT

then hit ENTER

Take the install CD out of the drive, and then see if you can open the
Display applet in Control Panel.

Regards,
