disk check utility says "cannot open volume..."

I have run diskcheck (MY COMPUTER | HARD DRIVE C: |
PROPERTIES | TOOLS | ERROR CHECKING) and it always says
it needs to run the next time I start Windows. And, it
has, without trouble.

Until yesterday. Now, during boot, it disck check utility
says: "Cannot open volume for direct access" and then
aborts, moving on and successfully starting Windows.

I cannot find ANY information anywhere about the "disk
check utility" or this error message. Does anyone have a
clue why I might get this problem?

As for viruses/worms/adware, I always have Norton
AntiVirus and also occasionally run TrendMicro scan,
McAfee Stinger scan, as well as Spybot removal. There is
no indication of a worm or virus.

Any ideas?

Check this article number in the knowledge base 314058
run Windows Recovery Console and run CHKDSK that should
clear the hang up.
