disk defragmenter doesnt work

when i try to defragment a disk, an error messege appears
saying that"chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume" and
tells me to run chkdsk
i have had a problem with diskcheck before : my computer
checks disk for consistancy on every boot
help!
