Problem running Disk Check (chkdsk)

In trying to defrag my hard drive, got a message that said I needed to run
check disk first. I've discovered the disk is marked as dirty. So I attempt
to run chkdsk, get a message says 'cannot lock current drive-cannot run
because volume is in use.....want to schedule to check next restart?'...I say
Yes....reboot, but chkdsk does not run....system starts as normal. Still
cannot defrag because it says chkdsk is scheduled to run.....I've tried
everything I can find to get it to run...no luck. I read one of Wes Vogel's
threads on the subject,(3/16/06) and followed his advice: My computer/right
click on drive/properties/tools/error checking/check now/check both boxes.
Then reboot. Upon reboot, I get a message that says: Cannot open volume for
direct access...check complete. Then system boots up. What do I do now?
System is running ok in general, but hangs occassionally, and boots up
slowly. Anti-virus and anti-spy is up to date and checked regularly.

Thanks for the help Andrew, hope you have some patience, and some more answers.
I ran CHKNTFS /?, which defines the command and gives the options. So I ran
CHKNTFS /C C: (as I understand the options), then rebooted, but still got no
chkdsk, just a normal boot. I even tried CHKNTFS C: /C ---with no luck.
I ran CHKNTFS C: and the reply was: "Type of file is NTFS. C: is dirty.
You may use the /C option to schedule chkdsk for this drive."
So it knows what I want, just won't do it.
If it helps, or matters, I'm running XP Home SP 2.
Do I understand the command correctly? Should there be something else
following the C:

I had this same message regarding no defrag until...on my second drive.
I could get a chkdsk to proceed at boot but the message kept repeating.
I downloaded from http://www.hdtune.com/ the utility for the purpose of
scanning the drive to see if there were bad blocks causing this. Bad
blocks showed up on the scan.
The computer was taking a long time to shut down as well.The second
hard drive (an NTFS format)which was only for data was replaced a week
ago I ended up reinstalling windows on the new harddrive which was
partitioned. Windows is on a Fat32 partition and the data is on the
second partition with NTFS
Check your event manager log to see if there is a report regarding bad
blocks on the hard drive.

Lynn,

Sounds like something is "locking" the drive and preventing CHKDSK from
running - usual culprits can be anti-virus or anti-spyware. I'd suggest
that you boot into the XP Recovery Console and run CHKDSK from there. This
way, nothing should be accessing the drive and it should work. Let us know
the result.

Thanks for the help. I used my OS CD to boot into Recovery Console, ran
CHKDSK C: /R...successfully. It did a complete check, and said it found and
fixed one or more errors on the volume. After booting up, I ran the fsutil
dirty query and it said Vol C was no longer dirty. Subsequently was able to
perform a normal HD defrag. My system is running much better now...boot and
shut down times back to where they should be.
