When I disconnect my external drive via the safely remove hardware icon I
end up with a blue screen. I am currently using vista 64 bit operating
system.

Thanks

One of the 8-28-09 updates did this to you.
Uninstall all of these updates and then download them again, one at a time, until you find the one.

Fix recommended by Dell support and worked.
I have not yet found out which of these updates was the bad one, and it may have been just a bad installation.
only affects 64 bit OS.

I'd like to bump this thread up because I've been having the same
problem. I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit. I'm using two Western
Digital 300 GB hard drives and every time I try to safely remove them I
get a BSOD. Oddly enough, I tried my brother's Western Digital--it is
the same size but it hardly has any data on it--and there was no
problem.

I've tried uninstalling updates and that hasn't fixed anything. I also
checked my RAM and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong there. This
problem is fairly recent. I just noticed it last week.

Any help is appreciated.

And the BSOD says ..........................?
