Disconcerting knocking sound

Recently I have noticed a low key, single note sound almost like a knock
being produced by my XP Pro system just before it shuts down and accompanying
Microsoft shut-down jingle kicks in.
I have run my anti-virus software (avast) also spybot and adaware and all
looks clean and healthy.
Should I be worried by this disconcerting thudding sound or has my PC
paranoia reached new levels.

This doesn't sound like a software problem. It sounds like a fan that is
possibly going. Unplug the machine and open your computer case (if you
have a desktop) and clean out all dust bunnies. Use compressed air to
blow out all the dust. I usually do this outside on the back porch!

Once the machine is clean inside, plug it back in but leave the case
open. Start the computer and carefully observe all the fans, including
the one on the video card if present.

Try and isolate where the sound is coming from and if it is coming from
a fan, replace that fan.

If you are uncomfortable opening your case and doing this - and there is
no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to
a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA).

Before doing that just try to turn off your speakers and see if the sound
attack again. It may be because of one of your programs when they exist.
Ckeck their options. And check Control panel >Sound and audio>sounds tab to
see if that sound is for shut sown.

That's completely true, Ayush. Since we really didn't have too much
information from the OP I assumed hardware. But it could be that s/he
has an instant messaging app running and it is a "door knock".

Thanks Ayush, I have managed to trace the offending sound through the Sound
tab and it would seem that the noise I am hearing is in fact my Windows XP
Ding which is being used as my Default Beep.
If this is the standard noise that Microsoft emanates before the shutdown
jingle then it would seem that my paranoia is misplaced and I should be
thankful for my recent ear syringe treatment.

Appreciate the guidance.

You are welcome. And this is not a sound that windows make before shutdown.
It is the sound you get when something is Invalid or not present at that
moment,e.g. when you get an warning of not saved file and you click outside
the warning in that window.

Damn, can anyone suggest a test or diagnostic that will help me source what
is causing the offending, unwanted 'Default Beep'.
