Problem with low power alarm

I cannot get my low battery alarm to warn me before the power level gets down
to critical. Here's a screenshot of my settings

The problem is that when it gets down to 6%, I get no warning whatsoever.
As you can see, in the low battery alarm section, the Action is No Action. I
can't get it to change, even after I click Alarm Action, select both sound
alarm and display message and click OK.

I know of the "when the alarm goes off, the computer will..." option, but
all that's there is stand by, hibernate and shut down. I do not want it to
do any of that, I just want to get alerted when the power level gets down to
6%, nothing more. It is an inconvienience and annoyance when it goes to
hibernate, stand by, whatever with no warning.

One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of third-party
applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking". These include
but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee
VirusScan and/or Antispyware, NOD32, and Zone Alarm (Free, Pro, & Security
Suite).

I forgot to specify that when I do click alarm action again, both sound alarm
and display message are still checked. Display message was checked before,
but even then, I still don't get a message when power gets down to 6%. I do
have Ad-aware's Ad-Watch and Spybot Tea Timer as well as Avast Antivirus,
might one of those be blocking the message from showing?

See my very similar thread "no visual warning when battery close to
dead". Mine goes to hibernate too. The sound warning works, but no
visual. I run with the sound off so...

No one seems to have an answer... at least not yet.

You gave me an idea there. Since the sound warning wasn't enabled before, I
think I'll try that when I get the chance and see if it works

Disable Ad-Watch (http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=6077) and Tea Timer
(http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=32409), reboot & then see how the machine
behaves when you reset the alarm settings.

It seems to accept settings changes just fine without disabling those, I
just can't get it to give me an option besides shutdown, standby or hibernate.
How old is the battery?

It's about a year and a half, same as the laptop. It's not used very often
as I usually have the ac adapter plugged in, but when it it used, even for a
few minuites, I go ahead an deliberately leave the ac unplugged just to run
the battery all the way down so it doesn't get a memory

On a Dell, the "visual alarm" appears in the Notification area as a
yellow triangle. Your laptop vendors may have supplied something else.
Have you checked with them?
