Low power shutdown at 80%

I have an HP zx5000 laptop running XP Pro SP2. I keep up with the latest
updates.
A few months ago, I started having a problem where the laptop would shut down
at 80% battery power immediately. I have the low battery alarm set at 5%
and the
critical battery alarm at 3%, but I never see an alert box until I plug the
AC back in.
If I try to move the sliding controls in the power properties control
window, they
snap to 80% and will not go anywhere else. If I cancel the window, they are
back at 5 and 3 percent, but the laptop still goes to standby at 80%.

Since this just started happening recently, it seems like some patch I have
installed is the culpret.

What was that patch?
Why don't you check your battery?

If I knew which patch affected the power properties, I'd back it out,
but as I said, I have been installing Microsoft's updates as they
came along and this started happening perhaps months ago.

As far as checking the battery, I don't know what you mean. Beside,
how would a problem with the battery cause the behavior I describe
in the power properties controls?

You have a laptop. You are having troubles with the battery/power
issues. There is a good chance your problem is caused by faulty
hardware. Reasons could be that the charger connection on the
motherboard isn't correctly reporting the true state of the battery,
the battery is damaged, and/or the machine isn't charging correctly. To
fix problems like this, the motherboard will need to be replaced.
