Disappearing Newsgroup Account name and Password

They keep disappearing even though the box is checked to "remember password"
Tools/Accounts/News.*.com/Properties/Server I check the box that says "This
server requires me to log on" and enter my account name and password then
check the box "Remember my password. When I go to a newsgroup it repeatedly
asks for this same information even though I enter it again. There have
been times when i hit cancel and try going to a different group and it goes
to the new group with no problems other time I check under Tools and the
information is gone again.

Windows Mail often forgets the password if you both enter it and add a click
to the Remember my password box in the same session. If this happens, click
on Tools, then Accounts, then the affected account, then Properties, then
Server. Make sure the click for Remember my password is still there. If
there
are still dots for the password, click at the right end of them and
backspace
over them. Then enter the password again, and without changing the
checkmark for Remember my password, click Apply, then OK, then Close.

Which news server?
Some news servers are flaky, causing Windows Mail to believe that
the password has failed, so it erases the saved password.

It's a bug in Windows Mail. I have had it happen 5 or 6 times since
4/2007 when I started using Vista. The way I have gotten out of it is
enter the credentials, exit out of WM and boot the machine. It usually
holds after that, but that's no guarantee.

I've tried that with no luck. I ask myself "Why did it work this time" and
I can't answer, I didn't do anything different this time that I didn't try
before. That is the nature of a bug though. It seems to be getting worse,
this is the first time I've been able to get on since the original post.
Don't you just love vista. I guess that's bill gates plan, if the OS is a
piece of crap everybody will be happy to buy the next version so they can
get rid of the old one )o:

If it's a bug in Windows Mail, why aren't more people experiencing it?
More likely that it is due to running a non-compatible third party security program.

There's a bug in Windows Mail that often makes it forget the password
if you add the checkmark to make it remember the password, and in the
same session of modifying the properties, give it the password.

A workaround for this is to first add the checkmark, then close down
the windows for modifying the peoperties, then open these windows
again, then if there are any dots for the password, click at the end of
them, then backspace over the dots, then enter the correct password
even if there were no dots to erase.

Windows Mail also tends to forget the password if a login to the server
fails for some reason; Microsoft prefers not to call this a bug. Use the
same method to give it the password again.

I haven't seen the account name disappear also, though.

You can believe that if you want, when *everything* and I mean
*everything* is Vista compliant software on this computer. I use WD,
NOD32, the Vista FW and nothing else.

I am also a .Net software developer for many years and a COM/COM+
software developer for many years as well.

You're not going to convince me that this is not a Vista and WM bug issue.

Have you tried different news servers?

If you have NOD32 configured to scan emails, it could well
cause this problem. Email scanning is not recommended:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

I see nothing in those links to convince me that Vista and WM or Vista
and Outlook are not the culprits of credentials being lost.

Vista's NT services and Vista's Task Schedule loose credentials as well,
at times.

All I can say is that neither of my two computers has ever
lost a password since installing Vista 24 months ago.
(Beta testers got an advance copy).
I have 11 mail accounts and 5 news accounts.

I'll tell you another thing WM was doing. It keep changing the View from
show all messages to group all messages by conversations. It kept
repeatedly making the switch. It would hold for awhile on the all
messages after I would set it back to that setting. Only for it to be
set back to group by messages again a few days later. It was ridiculous,
but it hasn't done that in a long time.

Typo. Has nothing to do with authentication. After I (re)enter
username/password newsgroups work fine.

Try removing the account and rebuild it after you close & reopen WM?

WM accounts have proven to be easily affected by aggressive email scanning
from the main AV Applications, Norton, McAfee and Trend for example. Mail
scanning is not necessary.
