Direct Cable Connection host(xp) to guest(98se)

Trying to direct cable connection to a lap top w/98 as guest to pc w/xp as
host. Not making connection. On the lap top it saids parallel cable on lpt1
is disconnected.
However I connect by making 98 host to xp guest. HELP

In order to make a direct cable connection, you need a special cable.

If what you are really trying to do is create a permanent home
peer-to-peer network, then you probably don't want a direct cable
connection but rather an ethernet-to-ethernet adapter connection using
a crossover cable. In case this is really want you are aiming at, here
