Direct Cable from Win 98 to XP Pro

F

Fabien

I have the connection between the Win 98 box (host) and
XP Pro (guest) but I can not access the files because it
ask for a password. I have file sharing without a
password on the 98 system. I'm using a parallel transfer
cable on LPT1 ports.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Fabien

Both computers must be members of the same WORKGROUP. XP
requires the W98 user to be a legal user of the XP
machine and thus a password. The XP user only needs to
be able to see the W98 machine and its resources. If the
W98 machine askes the XP user for a password, check the
domain / workgroup / see if you can see the W98 machine
in the network neighborhood / and check the W98 machine
share for full access.

Thom, using the same workgroup name on both computers makes networking
a little easier, but it isn't necessary. Windows networking supports
multiple workgroups.

The password prompt proves that the computers have found each other on
the network. If they couldn't find each other, there would be an
error message, not a password prompt.
XP requires the W98 user to be a legal user of the XP
machine and thus a password.

I don't think that applies here. XP Pro would only attempt to
validate the Win 98 user if both of these are true:

1. Win 98 is trying to access files stored on Win XP. If I understand
Fabien's message, he's doing the opposite: Win 98 is the host and Win
XP is the guest.

2. "Simple file sharing" is disabled on the XP Pro machine. By
default, XP Pro allows access by all users.
The XP user only needs to
be able to see the W98 machine and its resources. If the
W98 machine askes the XP user for a password, check the
domain / workgroup / see if you can see the W98 machine
in the network neighborhood / and check the W98 machine
share for full access.

Fabien, do I understand correctly that you're trying to use XP Pro to
access files that are stored on Win 98?

What is the complete and exact text of the password prompt?
