Direct cable connection

I would like to be able to transfer files from my laptop
to desktop (and vice versa) using direct cable
connection. I have a cable with parallel connections on
each end and have used it in the past to do this (with
Windows 98 and ME), but now I have two computers with
Windows XP and have not been able to figure it out--I
always get hung up on the computer names and passwords,
and have yet to successfully connect and transfer files.
Here is how I have attempted to make a connection--what
am I doing wrong??

1. Using the connection "New Connection Wizard", I
select "Set up an advanced connection"
2. For the host computer, I select "Accept incoming
connections"
3. I select "Direct Parallel"
4. I do not allow virtual private connections, since
this is not an internet connection
5. Under user permissions, I set up a connection for
myself, including my full name and password
6. Under Networking Software, all boxes are checked,
including "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks"
7. I then click "Finish"

On the Guest computer, I go through the same routine,
only I select "Guest".

I then get to "Computer Name"--not sure what "name" to
use, so I have used the computer name from System
Properties

I then select Direct Parallel as the Device.

I then select "My use only" under Connection Availability

I then try to connect. I enter the same username and
password I created before. However, invariably I get the
error message:

"Windows was unable to connect using the user name and
password you provided. Please re-enter the user name and
password." To further complicate matters, it now wants
a "Domain"--have no idea what to put under Domain.

I have tried changing passwords to get it to work, to no
avail. Please Help!

This problem appears to be partially solved--I now have a
connection, but I haven't been able to figure out how to
use this connection to share files--can't see them at all.
