direct cable connection: xp to windows 98

I'm unable to establish a direct parallel cable connection between my laptop
running Windows XP Professional and my pc running Windows 98. I'm using a
25-pin male-to-male parallel cable on LPT1, both computers. I've installed
and activated the direct cable connection in W98, set the computer up as the
host and instructed it to listen on LPT1 for a guest computer connect. I've
then set up the direct cable connection in xp using the wizard. When I try
to access the pc/W98 from the laptop/xp, I get a message in xp saying "error
628: the connection was cancelled by the remote computer before it could be
completed". I get this same error whether I've activated the direct cable
connection on the pc/W98 or not, and whether I've even got the parallel cable
connected between the two computers or not. I have also gotten a 721 error.
Am I missing some basic networking requirement? Can XP talk to W98 directly
over a direct connection as-is, or do I need a networking protocol of some
kind between the operating systems? What do I need to do to establish the
connection?

Try running Network Setup Wizard o the XP system. Choose the settings that
match your configuration.

You then should create the Network Setup Floppy Disk and run it on the 98
system.

This will work.

You do not use a regular parallel cable to do what you're trying to do. You
must use what's known as a Laplink cable to connect two systems via the
parallel or serial ports.

I set my desktop (windows 98) as host and my laptop (windows XP) as
guest. After "verifying name.......", I see both computers connected.

BUT I cannot see any file (all files set shared on my desktop). In the
laptop, I cannot find my desktop icon although they are connected! I
go to Microsoft Windows Network in the laptop and click the only
network (hereby ABC). It comes up with a message "ABC is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions."

If I disconnect the DCC, I can access ABC network and of course, I
only saw my laptop name. If I connected with DCC, it will show above
message.

I have another laptop running windows ME and it connects with the
desktop through DCC without any problem.

I have tried several times at this newly bought windows XP laptop but
only see it connects to the desktop but no way to transfer files
because I cannot find the desktop icon or desktop shared files.

Please help me!!
