Direct cable connection

I am trying to establish a direct cable connection between two desktops
computers. The host computer is running Windows ME and the guest Windows XP
Home. I have followed the instructions in the networking wizard and every
time I try to connect I get an error 771. Error 771: The connection attempt
failed because the network is busy. Also I am not entirely sure if I have the
right cable to do this. I am trying to connect using LPT1 through a direct
parrallel cable. How do I tell if this cable is a crossover cable or a
straight through cable?
