Linking W98 and XP PCs

I'm trying to use a direct cable connection to give my XP PC access to some
files on my Win 98 laptop. Is this possible? I'm using a "laplink" type
cable. (Had success in connecting 2 W98's but am having probs with the 98 ->
XP connection).

Any help?

THX!

This web page has links to several articles about using direct cable
connection:

If the computers have Ethernet adapters, I recommend using an Ethernet
connection. It's much easier to set up and use than a "laplink"
direct cable connection, and it transfers files much faster.
