Digital Input to Monitor stopped working

Hope someone has an answer to this one. I have been using
Windows XP Pro with an 18" flat screen monitor in digital
mode for about 3 months. The digital mode no longer works.
I am currently using the analog input and all is well.
Gateway tech. support has replaced my video card (Nvidia
Geforce4 Ti 4200), but I have the same problem. I have
since spoke to a local Gateway tech. rep. and was told he
has seen the problem before and the only way he was able to
fix it was to re-format the HD and re-install. This is a
bit drastic to me. If this is truely a s/w problem has
anyone else experieced it? Yes, I have unloaded and reload
drivers.
Any idea's are appreciated.

Logic would seem to indicate that if the problem is not with the output card
then it's with the monitor input, rather than a software problem.
