two monitors

Is there a way to hook up a 24" and 19" monitor with the follwoing config:
24" act as primary monitor
19" act as secondary.

Here is an email describing the problem from my IT guy, but he does not
think its possible:

"Digital input is hooked up to the pc in the same room as the second
monitor and analog is hooked up to the primary pc. However, the 19" does not
show the whole screen when connected to the primary pc. It might be a
limitation that it is not a wide screen monitor and its max resolution is
1280x1024. If the 19" monitor was set as the primary monitor, it'll look
fine, but then the 24" will be be at 1280x1024 stretched. There may be a
resolution limitation with the lower resolution of the two monitors being the
limitation."

Can you please help me find out if i can do it the way I would like, without
loss of functionality for the high resolution, 24" monitor...and stretching
the screen is not a solution i could use. thansk.

I had a similar problem, which was caused by insufficient memory on the
video card. I worked around it by reducing the color resolution on the
second monitor. Then I could set the sizes as I wished.

will an upgraded video card fix it?

with the right video card you should be able to set 2 different
resolutions..one for each monitor.
What are you using for a video card??

Your video card seems not be able to do the job required. Try a better video
card or call/mail etc.. the manufacturer of your video card they should know
what your video card can do. What is your video card?

Yep. The system I'm writing this from uses a 19" standard and 22" wide.

The 19" is set to 1280x1024, and the 22" to 1680x1050. The 19" connects by
VGA connector, the 22" by DVI. Works well, was very easy to set up, and I
don't have a real fancy or expensive video card.

But, also, it depends on your video hardware capabilities and the connectors
available.

It looks like your card has two connectors and can drive two monitors.
Here is an email describing the problem from my IT guy, but he does not
think its possible:

"Digital input is hooked up to the pc in the same room as the

limitation that it is not a wide screen monitor and its max resolution is
1280x1024.

This almost sounds like you are talking about something else here, where you
are using one connector to drive two monitors.

In that case, yes, you do have to select one resolution and one display will
suffer.
If the 19" monitor was set as the primary monitor, it'll look
fine, but then the 24" will be be at 1280x1024 stretched. There may be a
resolution limitation with the lower resolution of the two monitors being
the
limitation."

Again it sounds like you are trying to drive two differently shaped monitors
with one signal.

There are at least two places where resolution is affected. One is the
capability of the monitor itself; it won't display resolutions it doesn't
support. Another is your video card, which must have two connectors, and
which must support resolutions to match the monitors. And, you have to
have drivers installed for it.

Can you please help me find out if i can do it the way I would like,
without
loss of functionality for the high resolution, 24" monitor...and
stretching
the screen is not a solution i could use. thansk.

Connect the two monitors to separate connectors on the card, reboot if
needed, Windows should detect that there are two monitors connected.
Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties, then Settings, and you
should see two monitor icons. Click on one and set the resolution and
whatever else you need to, and then do the other, and then pick one as the
primary. Finally, click on the non-Primary and set "Extend My Windows
Desktop onto this monitor" as you like. If you don't select that, the 2nd
monitor will mirror the first. If you do set it, they are independent and
you've got much more screen space.

That should be pretty much it.
