Dialup disconnecting after sending/receiving

Hello. I'm on dialup (blech) and just a few days ago, everytime my mail
receives it hangs up after receiving the messages. It won't even send what's
in the outbox because it disconnects right after receiving. I have changed
nothing and it just started this after a year of owning. Could this be
something that occured after an update (which it had done right before). And
how can I fix it? it is VERY frustrating and aggravating!
