Dial-up disconnecting

OS = XP Home; when reading articles on the Web, the Dial-
up connection is disconnected frequently. The usual
disconnect time is less than 2 minutes. Longest in the
tests I have made is 6+ minutes. I have
neither "Disconnect if idle for ? minutes"
nor "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed"
checked. I did try "Disconnect if idle for 59 minutes"
and it still disconnected. As I'm typing this, it has
disconnected. I've experimented with two modems with the
same results. Have also experimented with different power
cord, phone line cord, with/without telephone in line,
with/without surge protector in line. Have even connected
to the outside phone line interface, all with the same
results.

When moving frequently from page to page on the web or
when downloading a file, the connection remains no matter
how long it takes. It's only when there is a period of
idle while reading an article or while typing a message
like this without moving to another web page. It seems
that as long as there is data coming in over the line,
the connection holds.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Have you discussed this with your service provider (ISP) ?

There is also "idle time before hanging up" in control panel \
networks \ properties \ options. I only found out about this one last
week via a message posted by Pa Bear. Since I have 15 minutes set in
IE and this one says 20 minutes, they aren't coordinated.

From what I've seen, mouse activity seems to be the key to the
definition of idleness. Although I haven't had irratic disconnects
like you, I've been very active on line using the keyboard and had the
warning notice come up indicating that the connection was idle.

Thank you very much, Maureen. That appears to solve the
problem. The idle time in the location you mention was
set for 1 minute. It is now 'never'. As of this moment,
I've been on the same page for more than 10 minutes and
it's still connected. Thanks again!!!

Great! Glad to hear it's worked out for you.
