Dial-up Connection

Claude Beck

My dial-up connection screen is popping up at (seemingly) random times. I
suspect it's from Windows Update because it's happening on both my desktop
and my laptop and it started shortly after I updated Internet Express a
couple of weeks ago.

I've been tearing my hair out trying to find the program that calls the
connection screen up. Can anybody tell me where I can find it so I can look
for some way to control this problem? Or better still, does anyone know of a
cure for this thing?

Perhaps try installing a program like zonealarm. That tells you what program
is trying to connect and asks if you want to allow it or not.

Good try, Colin! But I was running Zone Alarm until two days ago when I got
my network working (I had to delete it to get the machines talking to each
other) and it never showed any one trying to access while this was
happening. Now, I've switched to the built-in firewall in XP Home.

If you suspect it's Windows Update, you can turn off the automatic update
feature as follows. Open Control Panel, open System, go to the Automatic
Updates tab and select the option to turn off the auto updates.

If that doesn't resolve the issue it could be any other application on your
system that is set to check for updates automatically, you'll have to check
the options of your various applications. Real Player not only sets this by
default but has "news" function and if this feature is turned on you will
have the same issue. If you have your e-mail set to check for new messages
at specified times, this can cause the issue and do so even if your e-mail
client isn't open so you should check that as well.

One other thing you might try is the following, open Internet Explorer, go
to Tools, select Internet Options, go to the Connections tab and select
"Never dial a connection."
