dial up connection missing from system tray

whenever my mom connects to the internet on her dial up modem the icon
doesn't appear in the system tray/notification area. she is still connected
to the internet but has no way of disconnecting except to turn off her
computer.

i've checked her task config and her dial up connection doesn't appear in
any notification area past or present.

we have a network with ics, (she goes through my computer) but whenever my
computer is off and she has to go through her own computer that's when the
problem happens.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

I think if you go to network connections and look at the properties there is
a checkbox for 'Show icon in notification area when connected.' Hope that
helps.

I have had the same problem and it seemed to start a week or two ago
after a visit to Windows Update. Along with the Internet connection icon
disappearing, my Sound/volume control icon also disappeared. I found that
what was happening is that my desktop loaded, but the OS didn't complete
loading for some 2-3 minutes later. I did recover my icons with a registry
edit from Kelly's Korner web site, but have not figured out why XP is taking
so long to load after the desktop appears. I have almost always been able to
fix these types of things, but this one has me up the river without a
paddle. I have no spyware running and no virus's or worms on my system or
anything starting in msconfig to cause the problem. I even did an "in place"
repair install to no avail. If anyone has any ideas I would really
appreciate it. Not being a novice with XP this really has me baffled. I have
not made any changes in hardware either, so that SHOULD not be the problem.
Once XP-Pro finally gets booted up, everything is great. System is a P4 3g,
450W high-end PSU, NV FX-5900, 1gig DDR, 3hdds (all 7200 rpm running UDMA
mode-5), and the rest is pretty normal stuff with all the up-to-date drivers
etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I REALLY don't look forward to
reinstalling XP from scratch if I don't need to.
Note: I did try uninstalling any of the updates to see if I could find
which one may have started the problem, but that gave no results either.
System restore didn't help either (as usual........:).
