O.T. Laptop connection speed:

N

Navyguy

I have a friend who has a laptop, sorry I don't know the brand name
but she's using a 46.6 modem to connect to the Internet. Obviously her
connection speed is very slow and she keeps getting disconnected. When
I asked why doesn't she use DSL she told me it isn't offered in her
rural area. So my question is, is there some way that she can get a
higher connection than dial-up?

Thanks,
Robert

Usually the only choices are satellite and Cellular. The big downside
to satellite service is the "Throttling" if you exceed a preset amount of
data. Watch a few YouTube videos and you may notice the speed is
now down or below dial-up service. Satellite is slowly becoming a bit
more affordable but it's still expensive compared to Cable/DSL.

Satellite internet service. Expensive, but faster.

She can get what ever is available in her area, we have no idea what that
would be.

I appreciate the link but if you re-read my post I gave all the
information I could. The only options she has in her area is dial
up.

It would have been helpful to tell us where she lives. :)

Does this coverage map apply?:

What's her budget?

Actually she has a 56k modem. Due to line quality it only connects at
46.6k. As to other options? Well, how much is she willing to pay?

Uuuhhh, you apparently missed the part before the link "The following is a
signature, don't take it personally unless it applies to you"

As that statement implies, it's a signature, it's at the end of every one of
my posts, look... there it is again.

If dialup is the only option she has, there's your answer, I'm not sure why
the question needed to be asked?

Does she have cell phone service available?
Does she have satellite TV service available?

Yes to either of those means she has possibly two other options.

Cell Internet through the Cell Phone Providers.
Satellite Internet through the Satellite TV Providers.

On the latter, if they do not provide it directly - they may be able to tell
her who does.

The dial-up - it's topped out. She's probbaly getting as fast as she ever
will with it.

The satellite services are pretty good, latency can be a drag, but for
general surfing and such - better than the alternative.

Cell is on the expensive side - but works well - if her coverage is good.

She should check every so often to ensure she still cannot get DSL. It's
not a 'check once' thing.

I think that she would need to use
a service that provides a 1-800
number to access the internet.

perhas aol or juno.

also, I think the above provide
accelerators which is supposed to
make the internet speed double.

but I can't say for sure.

here is a link for your convenience:

Those so-called accelerators are nothing more than content filters that
remove image data, trading image quality for speed. It does nothing for
actual data throughput.
