Dial-up connection duration

When a dial-up connection is open, is there a way to set the computer so that
the open connection and the length of time it's been open are prominently
displayed? I'm used to a Mac where the connection time is always displayed,
so I keep on forgetting to close the connection, thus running up my phone
bill...

not off the top of my head...

there is a setting to disconnect if idle after 20minutes
