IE keeps dialing my modem

B

Bryan Dayton

Hopefully this question has been answered before, so here goes...

After upgrading from dial-up internet connection to wireless broadband (via
LAN), IE 6 keeps trying to connect via the phone line despite the facts
that:

1) The broadband connection is already active (it's always on)

2) I've set the IE Connection/Servers property to "NEVER DIAL" the land-line
modem.

IE ignores the setting and tries to dial repeatedly. How do I get IE to
honour its own settings?

I'm using XP Pro on a stand-alone desktop, single user, with all updates
installed. Office/Outlook has no problems, just IE.

If you're sure it's set not to dial, then I'd suspect a third-party dialler
has got onto your computer.

This might be a remnant from previous ISP software, or it could be a
porn-Trojan.

Suggest looking for ISP entries in add/remove programs. Also scan with
Ad-aware, and check for suspicious processes in Task Manager.

Also check your phonebill to see what numbers are ACTUALLY being dialled.

Oh, and stop using IE. Get Firefox. All you have to do with IE is to
accidentally click a porn-ad and you've got the dialler.
