DHCP Address Does not allow connectivity

I have a new thinkpad I am trying to connect to my network. It is an XP Pro
machine. I set it up to DHCP. It gets a valid address along with the correct
gateway, dns and wins addresses when I do an IPCONFIG /ALL.

However, I can’t ping anything, only the loopback. I can’t even ping the
address handed to me.

BUT, If I take that SAME address handed out by the DHCP server and assign it
manually, I have connectivity and can ping anything.

WHY!?

This has completely baffled me. I have checked the DHCP server logs and they
don’t show anything out of the ordinary. The log only shows that the address
has been leased correctly.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Fixed it!

I assigned a mac address in the properties of the nic from the device
manager, I just changed the mac address by one number and that did the trick.

Does anyone know why something like that would happend? This is the second
case I've seen.

Hi
What and how are you connected to? Where is the DHCP server?
