dfs issues

we have a mapped drive on everyones system pointing to drive 'R' - its
actually a dfs share with folders that point to various regional servers
across our wan

its all in w2k

anyway, it seems quite slow from certain locations and even slows things
down to a crawl when opening say my computer - this is without even
trying to open the 'R' drive

does using dfs like this mean the systems contact the dfs root server at
our head office or something, ive no idea how to troubleshoot it ... if
a system doesnt have this drive everything is normal/fast

Is each DFS server hosting a copy of the root? If so, the clients should be
contacting a server in their site. If not, the clients will contact the root
server.
