Device connect/ disconnect sound then mouse freezes?

My computer randomly freeze for a second or two, while it will plays the
device connect sound and then the device disconnect sound. It is totally
random. I have an old usb Intellimouse Explorer. Sometimes the mouses red
light turns off and I have to restart the computer to get it to work.
