Mouse Freezes Up!

I have an intermittnet, but nagging, problem with my 6-year old Gateway WinXP
Pro desktop. When running any program, I will hear the "Bong" USB connect sound,
the mouse freezes, then unfreezes...and I hear another "Bong". When it's doing it,
it happens every 3-5 seconds. There are no other USB devices connected. Device
Manager shows no USB conflicts. Today I disconnected the Logitech Optical Mouse
and installed a Logitech Cordless Mouse (plugging in to the same USB connector).
The "Bonging" has finally stopped. What could have gone wrong with the 6-year old
mouse that would have caused it to do this? (I really liked that mouse).

Thanks!
Scott

Could be dirt/dust/lint, worn contacts, broken wires in cable, etc. Six years is four years longer than any of mine last.

Brian,

I took your advice. I opened the mouse and cleaned the dirt and lint from the wheel inside,
blew everything out, and reconnected it. The problem is gone. No more "bonging". Who would
have thought it would be that simple! Now I can keep using my favorite mouse :)

Thanks again!
