Detecting network settings takes ages

About 15 minutes. Never used to. It does eventually start up OK.

Any ideas?

Too many options, broken NIC, driver problem, wrong ip configuration. What
OS are you talking about and how is the machine connect, over a switch or
directly to a router or modem?

What have you tried so far?

What operating system are we talking about?

Assuming we are talking about some version of Windows here, what did you
find in the event viewer?

Again assuming some version of Windows, are you connected to a domain,
or were you once and are not any more or are you in a workgroup?

Did any of the results of Googling "preparing network settings" not work
for you? Which (if any) did you try and what was the result?

Based on the information you have given my initial answer to your
problem will have to be as much help as your question was....... I have
no idea.

Post the output of:

ipconfig /all
route print

and state whether the IP address is obtained via DHCP (and from where) or
staticly assigned.

I used to have a 'work' computer that did that (only a few minutes,
though, not 15) after I moved it home (local office closed so I had to
work from home.) I think the issue was something with DHCP timing out
and maybe some conflict with the router I had at the time (Linksys
BEFSX41). I changed it to use a fixed IP address, and now it boots up
fast.

Agreed, one should always try to find something positive, no matter how
minor it is. I'm aware that he's trying to make a big issue of top-posting.
It's the highlight of his two recent responses in this group :)
