Help When I switch on the computer and sign in all I get is my background
but no icons or start menu I have tried an xp repair but it's still the same.
nothing happens when right or left clicking the mouse, I can however get the
task manager by pressing ctrl alt del but it won't let me carry out a new
task. I'm at my wits end

It sounds as though your account has become corrupt as its not fully loading
when you sign in, boot into safe mode, create a new account, restart machine,
log into this new account and then transfer your old account docs and files
to your account and then finally delete your old account by going to user
accounts in the control panel.
