explorer.exe crash on startup

When I log into Windows XP, explorer.exe crashes without an error message. I
therefore have no icons, start menu, etc. and can only run things by
Alt+Ctrl+Del by selecting "new task". When I run explorer.exe again, my
icons/start menu appear for a second or two, but then disappear leaving me
with a blank background once again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I wasn't able to figure it out completely yet. What I've done is
alt+ctrl+del, run explorer.exe, then quickly open up my start menu and run
any program. This somehow stops explorer.exe from shutting down again. Then
it gives me this error:

Buffer Overrun Detected!

Program: C:\Windows\explorer.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's
internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be
terminated.

I haven't figured out how to avoid this error message yet, but as long as I
do not hit OK, everything seems to function correctly.

Could there be malware running?

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged
or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files can be repaired.

Hello !
I have the same problem. SFC couldn't help.
I ran Adaware and spybot too. They couldn't find anything of interest.
