explorer.exe crashing on startup - help

Hi, thanks in advance for any help. When I load WinXP, the taskbar and start
menu freeze instantly and I'm unable to click on the desktop icons. Before
long, I have an error message telling me that Explorer.exe is not responding.
When I end the task, explorer resets and then start menu/taskbar disappear
then reappear. Once it's reloaded, the same problem continues before
eventually crashing again.

I am unable to access anything. I'm using a less than six-month-old Dell
portable and run Virus scanners regularly. The problem just started happening
and the computer hasn't been connected to the internet in over a week, so I
don't think it's a virus.

I was able to start the computer up in safe mode to complete a system
restore. There were two restore points before today, one was 1 week, the
second 1 week and 1 day. I restored to the 1 week old settings as this
problem just started happening today, but unfortunately, the problems
followed me to the new settings. System restore completed properly and it
looked like it was going to work for a second - I was even able to double
click on My Documents and browse the files - but after about 10 seconds,
Explorer.exe crashed again.

Thanks again for any help or insight you may be able to provide. I spent
about an hour with Dell Support to today and they did not provide any
worthwhile assistance at all. Take care.

Please try in safe mode.
If in safe mode your computer is good, you may have one of the following:
1- A virus = Scan your computer with a updated antivirus.
2- A driver problem=if you install any software these days uninstall it. Or
if you add a hardware disable it. Or if ypu updated your hardware driver,
roalback to previuose version.
Good Look
