Desktop Icon Show Desk.scf will not work

M

Marv

Running Windows XP Home addition.

It appears that after I installed and ran a children's game the Show Desk
Icon changed appearance and now produces the message "Windows cannot open
this file" when clicked.

I copied the file Show Desktop.scf from another computer and pasted it in
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch.

Same problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Marv

Rich,

I did the run command and received the message that is was installed.
Unfortunately nothing has changed.

With the limited knowledge I have about Wndows XP it appears that the third
line in the file Show Desktop.scf which is "IconFile=explorer.exe,3" cannot
be found. Or maybe it is Command=2 that is causing the problem. It would
seems that some file is either missing or corrupt that causes the problem.

1) Where can I find an explanation of how the terms in the .scf file are
used and what functions they perform?

2) Any other ideas how to fix the problem?

Thanks for your help,

Marv

Ramish,

I found the answer on Google when I typed in "SHCmdFile". This is the link
http://www.jsifaq.com/subS/tip9200/rh9221.htm

I corrected the file association and the icon appeared and now works.

Thanks for the suggestions that helped me find the answer.

You're welcome Marv. A simple command line (below) would have helped, as
well:

regsv32 /i shell32.dll
(From Start, Run)

Alternately, the SCF association fix from:

These .scf things fascinate me; it's like there's a whole abandoned
script language that has "show desktop" as the only script written in
it! I can't believe a whole language and file type was created just
to support this single file, so I wonder if there are any docs on it?

Google( .scf )
Google( .scf file )
Google( .scf files )

Well, that was certainly endarkening...

Searching for almost anything anymore @ Microsoft sucks. They have really
screwed the pooch with Search @

and

Google has nothing to fear from Microsoft in the Search area. You cannot
even do an Advanced Search anymore. ;-(

Oh wow, that's definitely worth the effort of developing a nwew script
language and engine! ;-)
%windir%\system32\View Channels.scf typed into Start | Run on my machine

Yes, if you skip IE4.xx and aren't working in an OS that has desktop
integration natively, you may not have the "channels" code?

That opens the search after a page on Desktop.scf, which I went back
to (navigation works). There, it was maintained that "XP" was the
oldest Windows version required... odd, as I recall this .SCF file
first appearing in Win98 original (as part of desktop integration)
For any of the above searches, you have to sift through a ton of garbage to
find anything of any value at all.

Indeed; I went MEGO pretty quickly!

Oy, so many forum links depressingly amount to "huh? wtf??" :)

It's so wierd, given these things first appeared around the same times
as WSH... one wonders why the engine was developed so close to the
same time that VBScript and JavaScript were de-linked from HTML.
