Go to C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
(where user_name is replaced by your login name)
Create a Text file called "Show Desktop.SCF" with the
following contents:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Good Luck !

I lost the show desktop icon that normally resides next
to the Start menu. How do I get it back?

Close. You need to then rename the text file to "show desktop.scf" before it
will work.
